THE GROOVE ABIDES
THE GROOVE ABIDES
I am a Nashville-based drummer and percussionist whose playing draws from a background in jazz, classical, and marching percussion.
I am a native of Lexington, Kentucky. I began studying percussion seriously in high school, earning a place in the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts and being named a three-time All-State percussionist. I then studied towards a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Kentucky, where I performed with the UK Percussion Ensemble, Wildcat Marching Band, and Jazz Ensemble, serving as the Jazz Ensemble’s drummer during my junior and senior years, whilst studying jazz drum set under Professor Paul Deatherage.
After graduating, I moved to Nashville and began working professionally across the city’s music scene, transferring my ability from jazz combo and big band settings to the pocket and groove-driven Americana scene. Along with other freelance work, I currently play drums with Cimarron 615, a Nashville-based group featuring veteran musicians associated with Southern rock band Poco.
My playing continues to evolve as I draw from both my formal jazz training and the musicians who have influenced me throughout my life. I am particularly drawn to the groove and restraint of players like Steve Jordan, while the creativity and individuality of drummers I grew up listening to, such as Carter Beauford and Glenn Kotche continue to influence the way I approach the instrument.
